Mazda dealers like CardinaleWay Mazda the Mazda dealership near paradise, Nevada, recently received some good news. For the first time, Mazda bested automakers Toyota and Lexus to capture the No. 1 slot in Consumer Reports’ annual vehicle reliability survey. Toyota and its Lexus luxury brand held the top spots for the past few years, so this is a significant accomplishment for Mazda.
Buick and Honda both saw improvements in their ranking, moving up to join Mazda, Toyota and Lexus to take their places in the top five.
According to the Paradise area Mazda dealership, the results of the reliability survey were released at a virtual meeting of the Automotive Press Association of Detroit. It was comprised of Consumer Union members who owned vehicles between the 2000 and 2020 model years. Over 300,000 models were represented in the study.
Buick made significant gains, due in part because users reported few issues with its small offering. Honda moved up in the survey thanks to some positive improvements to its lineup, which outweighed problems with the Passport SUV and Odyssey minivan.GMC and Chevrolet moved up significantly, due to the exceptional reliability of the Chevy Bolt EV, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and the GMC Sierra 2500HD. Other brands that saw a significant rise include BMW, Jeep and Volvo. Specific models that performed well include the BMW 3 Series and X5, and the Volvo S60/V60 and XC40. The Jeep Gladiator was rated as a very reliable model in its initial year, and the Wrangler saw gains in reliability.
Some manufacturers that experienced significant drops in their ranking had problems with infotainment systems and transmissions. According to Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing for Consumer Reports, some automakers experienced problems with new touchscreen technology. Others had issues with continuously variable transmissions, nine-speed transmissions and ten-speed transmissions.
Ford and Lincoln, which both placed in the middle of the survey’s ranking, saw large drops in ranking due to major problems with new SUVs. The Ford Explorer, Ford Escape, Lincoln Aviator and Lincoln Corsair all received low reliability scores.
Electric automaker Tesla experienced problems, causing it to sink to next-to-last place due to issues with three of its four models. Some Tesla Model Y SUV owners reported problems that included misaligned body panels and paint that didn’t match. One Tesla owner found hair in the exterior paint job. “It’s surprising with all the technology in Teslas, it’s somewhat the basic issues they seem to struggle with,” Fisher said.
According to Consumer Reports, almost half of the new auto models scored much less than average for reliability.
